Estar na Grama

poems · 2024

Cover of Estar na Grama: the title in a pale panel with a double rule, over a photograph of a lawn.

It gathers poems written, abandoned and taken up again over the course of a decade, and it is the first book signed Danilo de Athayde, the one the author considers his first in earnest. It was published by Patuá, in São Paulo, and poems from it have circulated before and since in escamandro, Germina and Ruído Manifesto. In an interview with Sidney Summers, he said that in the first section, which gives the collection its title, he set himself the perhaps impossible task of imagining a “Whitman dentro de casa”, a Whitman inside the house.

Quem passar por aqui vai encontrar mesmo essa celebração de estar simplesmente vivo, entre vivos, essa alegria de existir agorissimamente e amar precarissimamente, como é possível.

From the preface by Guilherme Gontijo Flores, in Portuguese, on the book’s celebration of simply being alive among the living.

Os cães nos vigiavam lentos

os cães nos vigiavam lentos

sobre a terra quente que as folhas recobriam

amarelas. nossos dedos a tarde vermelha refletia

sobre os pelos dos cães o juízo sonolento

daquilo que fazíamos deixando-nos esquecer

como a tarde extinguindo-se também esquecia

Poem from the back cover. Original in Portuguese.
